Courtside Chaos ... the after party

Adam Maya reports on all of county action, both on and off the court, from Friday night.

By ADAM MAYA - OCVarsity.com - Saturday, January 26, 2008

Quick hits around O.C.

•  Huntington Beach beat Foothill, 69-66: The Oilers needed a 13-point rally in the fourth quarter and overtime to beat the Knights. Their reward? Another shot against El Toro in two weeks for the league title.

•  Garden Grove beat Bolsa Grande, 66-57: Garden Grove held Yaser Yousef to 12 points to take Round 1. Round 2, likely for the league championship, is the regular-season finale, Feb. 6.

•  Laguna Beach beat Calvary Chapel, 64-46: The Breakers can chalk up another league title and 20-win season.

•  Dana Hills beat Capistrano Valley , 59-46: How tough is the South Coast League? Dana Hills is in fourth place and Capistrano Valley is in first.

•  Santa Margarita beat Servite, 63-43: Klay Thompson only had seven points, but his 10 assists were much appreciated by teammates Zack Zaragoza and Jaime Serna, who each scored 20.

•  Mater Dei 77, JSerra 63: Demetrius Walker scored 29 points and JSerra kept it close until the fourth quarter, but the Monarchs beat the Lions for the third time this season.

Aliso Niguel beat Dana Hills 41-40: This is the Wolverines' first league victory of the season. Didn't Dana Hills just beat league frontrunner Capistrano Valley on Wednesday?

Katella beat Loara, 64-50: The Empire League has been decided, as Katella stays unbeaten and jumps three games ahead of the next three teams.

Capistrano Valley 59, Tesoro 56: The Cougars retake sole possession of first place and stay a game ahead of Mission Viejo .

Adam Maya reports on the action, on and off the court, this week.

Checking out the O.C. scene: Five games to watch this week

•Santa Margarita vs. Orange Lutheran: How big is the gap between the second- and fourth-best team in the county's toughest league?

• Fountain Valley vs. Los Alamitos: The Barons were supposed to be one of the most improved teams. Looks like that has already happened.

•Canyon vs. Villa Park: How does Villa Park have a losing record?

• Westminster vs. Pacifica : That 12-2 record is nice, but is Pacifica a playoff team?

• Valencia vs. Troy : This one could go either way, and a Troy victory really legitimizes its playoff aspirations.

O.C. leaderboard

•Scoring: Demetrius Walker, JSerra – 27.2 points per game

•Rebounding: Austin Wenger, Brethren Christian – 9 rebounds per game

•Assists: Noel Larkins , Valencia – 6.3 assists per game

"Courtside Chaos" ... that's a wrap - OCVarsity.com - 1/2/2008

Adam Maya covers the highlights from last week's action.

COURTSIDE CHAOS: LOOK BACK AT THE WEEK THAT WAS

Basketball a lot like football: It's not as well known nationally in boys basketball as it is in football, but when it comes to Orange County , the Trinity League reigns supreme.

Three of the top four teams in the O.C. top 10 are Trinity teams. Orange Lutheran and Servite are both top-25 worthy. The Friars won the Katella Klassic last week, and the Lancers finished third in the Torrey Pines Invitational.

As Mater Dei sets out on its annual undefeated trek through the county, there might be two worthy league contenders: Santa Margarita and JSerra. There is a reason Mater Dei coach Gary McKnight wasn't enthusiastic about having to face the Lions, who were not completely overmatched in their 14-point loss to the Monarchs last week, before league play.

And Santa Margarita, which edged Fairfax in the Lynwood Tournament, has beaten two top-10 teams and some good non-county teams.

Ballers of the week:
•Jerime Anderson, Canyon
•Demetrius Walker, JSerra
•Gary Franklin, Mater Dei
•Chris Manresal, Tesoro
•Klay Thompson, Santa Margarita
•Junior Eko , Sonora
•Ian Loftus, Capo Valley
•Tim Davis, El Modena
•Grant Heineken, Mission Viejo
•Jordan Sachs, La Habra
•Adam Mooney, Trabuco Hills
•Ryan Lawler, Laguna Beach
•Zach Torres, Wittier Christian
•Ryan Hill, Dana Hills
• Connor Crabtree, Aliso Niguel ANHS
•Kyle Fogg, Brea Olinda
•Stephan Torres, Fullerton
•Kyle Wallace, Servite
•Kiril Sergeyev, Irvine
•Junior Huerta, Savanna
•Matthew Cain, Kennedy
• Chad Miller, Foothill
•Trevor Collier, Rancho Alamitos
•Noel Larkins , Valencia
•Julio Cruz, Santa Ana
•Stefan Kaluz, Corona del Mar
•Tyler Stowers, St. Margaret's
• Dalton Harbaugh, Western
•E.N. Silva, Sunny Hills
•Andre Murillo, El Toro
•Nick Becker, Huntington Beach

Tales of the Top 10: The top-10 teams had quite a week in tournament play. No. 1 Mater Dei won the Orange Holiday Classic again, its third tournament championship this year. ... No. 2 Santa Margarita won the Lynwood Tournament. Santa Margarita might have been No. 2 even had it lost the title game. ... No. 3 El Toro traveled to Orlando to win the KSA Events Classic, a great effort on the road. ... No. 4 JSerra lost in the finals of the Orange Holiday Classic to Mater Dei, this after beating Canyon in the semifinals. ... No. 5 Mission Viejo won a division in the Desert Heat Classic, winning the final three games by less than 10 points. That 35-point loss to Mater Dei makes it difficult to rank the Diablos ahead of JSerra, which lost to the Monarchs by 14. ... No. 6 Capistrano Valley, competing in a different division of the Desert Heat Classic, finished third. ... No. 7 Canyon was the third-place winner of the Orange Holiday Classic. ... No. 8 Huntington Beach won the Spalding Invitational. ... No. 9 Corona del Mar won three of four at the Santa Barbara Holiday Classic. No. 10 Los Alamitos won the Century Holiday Classic.

Servite holds off La Habra in Katella Klassic - OCVarsity.com 12/28/08

The Friars prevail in overtime, 79-74, to earn spot in final against Savanna.

By STEVE FRYER

One team won. Two coaches were pleased.

Servite coach Tim Kelly liked the way the Friars hung in there to get a 79-74 overtime victory over La Habra in a pool-play game of the Katella Klassic on Friday at Katella, a victory that puts Servite into Saturday's 7:30 championship game against Savanna at Katella.

La Habra coach Mark Stewart liked the way the Highlanders hung in there, too, to make a fourth-quarter comeback that forced overtime.

Stewart said La Habra had been going through those late-December doldrums that can surround a high school basketball team. Friday's fiery showing is what he hoped to see as the Highlanders are less than two weeks away from the start of play in what could be a challenging Freeway League.

Servite (9-3) had a 13-point lead early in the third quarter. Then La Habra 6-foot-4 junior guard Jordan Sachs supported Stewart's description of him as “slippery” by finding different ways to get inside to score 10 points in the quarter and trim the Highlanders' deficit to seven points going into the fourth quarter.

La Habra , behind two 3-pointers by junior guard Randy Nygren and some quick drives by senior forward Dominique Moreno, caught the Friars and then passed them for a 63-59 lead.

In the final minute of the game, Servite's Andrew Ostergaard made two clutch 3-pointers. His second, set up by a nice drive-and-dish from senior guard Kyle Wallace, made it 68-68 with 17 seconds to go to force overtime.

Moreno fouled out in the first seconds of overtime. Nygren had fouled out late in the fourth quarter.

Servite took the lead late in overtime as junior John Russo scored on a reverse tip-in, Wallace made three free throws, and sophomore Richard Supan made two free throws with 10 seconds remaining.

“This is one of our better wins,” said Kelly, in his first season at Servite. “We're just trying to build a lot of confidence within our guys.”

Ostergaard finished with 21 points, including five 3-pointers. He was 8 for 13 from the floor. Wallace scored 17 and Russo added 13.

Sachs finished with 25 points. Moreno scored 20 and Nygren had 16. La Habra will play Katella in the third-place game today at 6 p.m. at Katella.

In the Orange Holiday Classic:

No. 1 Mater Dei 77, Foothill 43: Five players scored in double figures for the Monarchs (13-0), led by Jamaal Trice's 16. Mater Dei, which had a 24-3 lead after one quarter, will play Trinity League-rival JSerra in the championship game Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at Chapman University .

No. 4 JSerra 53, No. 8 Canyon 52: Demitrius Walker's 23 points led the Lions (11-3) in a wild semifinal victory over the Comanches (9-4). Canyon's Jerime Anderson scored 26 points with 16 rebounds and six assists.

In the Coast Classic: ANHS

Aliso Niguel 53, Fullerton 46: Connor Crabtree scored 17 points and Shance Boyd had 16 for the Wolverines (9-6) at Estancia. Aliso Niguel will play Chapparal of Temecula in the championship game Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Estancia.

Tustin fights through bad start to defeat Valencia - OCvarsity.com 12/27/08

By STEVE FRYER

Tustin  had reduced early and large deficits before.

"This time," Tustin 's Dominic Coulter said, "We came back and won."

The Tillers beat Valencia , 61-56, Thursday in a Century Holiday Classic second-round game at Century. They trailed, 13-0, midway through the first quarter. Then a couple of occurrences the rest of the quarter turned momentum Tustin 's way.

Valencia 's 6-foot-5, 265-pound center Brian Berkley got his second foul with 3:34 to go in the quarter, sending to the bench a significant matchup challenge for the Tillers, whose biggest starter was Coulter at 6-2, 190.

Then Tustin ended the first quarter with a pair of clutch three-pointers, one by junior Jordan Rodriguez and the other by sophomore Coulter, who made a 23-foot buzzer-beater to cut Valencia 's lead to one, 15-14.

The Tillers took the lead early in the second quarter and never relinquished it. Valencia, led by senior guard Noel Larkins, rallied in the final moments and trimmed Tustin's lead to 57-56 on a three-pointer by junior Christian Mack with 20 seconds left. Tustin free throws – three by sophomore Tanner Leonhardt and one by sophomore Ryan Ebel – provided the final five-point margin.

"We had to grit this one out," Tustin coach Ringo Bossenmeyer said. "This is a young group that is maturing every day."

That group will play the winner of Thursday's late Los Alamitos-Palm Desert semifinal in a tournament semifinal today at 8:05 p.m. at Century. Troy will play Glendora in the other semifinal today at 6:30 p.m. The tournament championship game is Saturday at 8:05 p.m.

Coulter finished with game highs of 25 points and 11 rebounds. Leonhardt had 17 points, including three 3-pointers, all in the second half. Rodriguez scored 13.

Larkins led Valencia with 21 points, nine in the fourth quarter, and nine rebounds.

No. 8 Canyon 55, Diamond Ranch of Pomona 40: Braden Priest's 19 points led the Comanches (9-3) at Chapman University . Canyon will play JSerra in a semifinal Friday at 6:50 p.m. at Chapman.

No. 4 JSerra 99, Canyon Springs of North Las Vegas 67: Demitrius Walker scored 40 points to lead the Lions (9-3). Alec Williams added 17 points and Chris Gabriel had 15.

Foothill 48, Long Beach Poly 39: Josh Sanchez scored 16 points, and Jacob Marano added 12 for the Knights (10-3), who will play top-ranked Mater Dei in a semifinal Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Chapman.

In the Katella Klassic:

Wolverines Teamwork Sets Record

THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER
Thursday, November 22, 2007

Aliso Niguel Wolverines Boys Basketball Head Coach, Keith Barnett requires the players at all levels in his program to volunteer their time to participate in community service. Not just play ball. He believes there is more to things than that.
In 2005 incoming sophomores and second year basketball players Harry Meussner and Connor Crabtree provided the athletes at Aliso Niguel High School with a way to participate in an ongoing community service program. They created Sock from Jocks, an official Wolverine Boys Basketball community service program.
Harry and Connor started with helping those in need by coordinating a clothing drive to collect coats and socks based on feedback from the Orange County Rescue Mission.
Today Socks from Jocks offers a variety of community service opportunities for athletic and educational organizations and includes an annual Heart for Hunger Food Drive.
The Wolverine Boys Basketball players were out in force recently as Meussner and Crabtree with teamwork from their moms and Booster Club board members; Jane Meussner and Tracy Browne helped coordinate.
Several of the players' parents volunteered to drive groups of players to their home communities going door-to-door requesting nonperishable food donations.
The food drive started with the many hours of preparation and planning.
Then the actual canvassing and collecting of the food followed by a timed scavenger hunt held at the Albertson's in Laguna Niguel. The players work in teams and are given a list of clues to locate specific holiday food items.
The players enjoy a pizza lunch (donated by Domino's Pizza) and help load Jane and Tracy's SUV's, who complete the event by delivering all of collected food to the Orange County Rescue Mission.
Socks from Jocks collected and donated a record 2,200 pounds of food this year.
